Revenge of the Fallen is set against the landscape of , which means you can look forward to references to the Global Recession of as well as brief news footage of President Obama.
Set two years after the original film, Sam Witwicky is now heading off to college. However, his academic pursuits become jeopardized after he touches a shard of the AllSpark and starts behaving erratically. Meanwhile, the resurrection of Megatron has allowed the sinister plans of an archvillain Decepticon known as The Fallen to move forward.
Before all of that mayhem, though, Revenge of the Fallen opens with a prologue set on Earth in 17, B. Transformers: Dark of the Moon takes place three years after the events of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Sam Whitwicky has finished college and is now looking for a job.
At the same time, Sam is also dealing with his new girlfriend, Carly Spencer Rosie Huntington-Whitley , and a new plan by the Decepticons to essentially bring Cybertron to Earth, effectively destroying the planet. The climax involves a full-scale attack on Chicago, with the Autobots racing in to thwart the invasion after briefly being banished from Earth.
Like its predecessor, Dark of the Moon kicks its story off with a prologue set in the distant past. This time, the Space Race of the s is the focus, with the film revealing that the Moon was actually the secret crash site of an Autobot ship called The Ark.
This digression to the past involves a whole slew of historical figures including John F. Kennedy, Richard M. Nixon, and Buzz Aldrin, the latter figure making an appearance as himself to help explain the conspiracy. With that time jump comes a new protagonist. Once the Autobot leader awakens, he and the three humans reunite with the few remaining Autobots to face a new foe.
Robots in disguise! Best science fiction movies. At the moment, the series seems to be focusing more on the Bumblebee timeline, there are still plans for further sequels to the main series and rumours of standalone films. The other option for viewing the Transformers films is to watch them in the order in which they were released. With the obvious exception of Bumblebee, this is relatively straightforward. Each film follows the last, with LaBeouf starring in the first three films and Whalberg being introduced in the latter two.
So starting with Bumblebee may mean for some that they start the series at its high point with the level of quality dropping over the many of the sequels. The counter-argument to this is that the series has made a staggering amount of money, and with four sequels, there is clearly a target audience that these films cater to, who will keep coming back for more rounds of Decepticons and Autobots fighting it out. While not as exhausting as some other franchises, these are clearly the best options for watching the Transformers films in order.
It does look like the franchise is setting itself up for several timelines co-existing at once, so it is worth noting the options in which to view the franchise as the timeline gets more complex over the coming years.
Even Wahlberg can only do so much to save a plot revolving around an organization that creates its own evil Transformers to battle our mechanical protagonists and a trip to China whose lone purpose seemed to be boosting international box office. The first live-action film is one of the best because it keeps things simple.
A bunch of stinker films led to a pretty dramatic turnaround. The kids will dig Bumblebee landing on Earth in and making quick friends with teenage Charlie Hailee Steinfeld in an emotional coming-of-age story line. Meanwhile their parents who grew up with 'Bee as their favorite toy can enjoy a slew of beloved Transformers characters hitting the big screen for a nonstop nostalgia-fest.
The dazzling opening scene, with Autobots and Decepticons throwing down on Cybertron, is the pinnacle of where this franchise could and should be going. Plus, not only did they have the mechanized chutzpah to kill Optimus Prime — a move that shocked an entire generation of kid fans — but they also put together an all-time great cast including Nimoy and Orson Welles, who voiced a planet-eating supervillain.
